About Passport Photo Rules

This is a single-purpose tool: crop a photo to the size your country publishes for passport photographs, and check it against the rules that country actually states. It runs entirely in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded — see privacy for how that is enforced rather than merely promised.

Who runs it

This is a small independent project, run from the United States. It is not a company, and it is not affiliated with any government or passport agency.

The best way to reach a person is by email: feedback@passportphotorules.com. Corrections to any country’s requirements are especially welcome — if a page here disagrees with an authority’s own guidance, that is a bug worth fixing quickly.

Where the requirements come from

Every measurement on this site was read from an issuing authority’s own published guidance. Each country page links to that source and shows the date it was last checked. 12 countries are covered.

The rule this site is built on is that a number nobody has published does not get invented. Where an authority states no head-height rule, no eye line or no resolution, the page says so instead of borrowing a plausible figure from somewhere else. That is why some pages are shorter than the equivalent elsewhere, and why a country whose photo size could not be confirmed is not offered in the tool at all.

It also means the site sometimes contradicts widely repeated advice. The United States allows a natural smile; France forbids a white background; Germany has not accepted a photo you bring in since May 2025. Each of those is linked to the page it came from so you can check.

What it does not do

• It does not approve photographs. Only the authority can do that.
• It does not retouch faces, and it does not offer to replace a background for any country known to reject edited photos.
• It does not upload, store, or transmit your photograph.
• It does not require an account, and it does not ask for payment.

Reporting a mistake

If a requirement here is wrong or out of date, please say so — include the country and a link to the official page, and it will be corrected. Requirements change without warning and a stale figure is the most harmful kind of error this site can make.
